Love Letter to My Son (awww)

Nineteen years ago this morning I gave birth to our son, Zachary. It was the beginning of a love affair that has lasted nearly two decades. I won’t tell you that time went in a blink because some of those afternoons amusing a toddler took about 3 years apiece. I love legos as much as the next kidlet but honestly two hours of tower building had me crossing my eyes. I watched and savored Zach’s childhood.I could list all kinds of fun outings, cool accomplishments and great memories. They are dear to my heart. Zach was an easy kid and so the teen years are ones I remember as a time of growth not an anxious time of wondering when we'd kill each other. We watched and guided as Zach slowly became a young man. Of course there were missteps by all of us along the way but nothing that time hasn’t fixed.Zach’s growing up didn’t happen in a blink but looking back it is a surprise how far we’ve come. I have a grown child who lives on the opposite coast. Amazing. Zach will return to Boston University this fall as a sophomore where he is studying neuroscience (yes proud parents). When he calls home to check in (yes weekly) we hear about pep band and chemistry lab, food trucks and swimming at the fitness center. He’s settled into BU life and it’s a good thing. I love to hear what he is up to and marvel over the things he’s studying and learning.I’ll indulge in one remember when for you. Back when Zach was in high school I stood on the sidelines watching a football game waiting to see him play. Another mother asked me what my son played. I smiled and said, “Clarinet.” We were waiting for the pep band to perform at half time.Zach is funny and smart. He’s also witty, tall, clever, and gentle. I love being his mom. Happy Cake and Candle Day Dear Boy.
