Opening Day
Friday June 15! It’s opening day! Two weeks ago I got to attend a sneak peek of the new Cars Land in Disneyland’s California Adventure. (My hubby works at Pixar that’s why. It’s not like they just asked a random knitter to come take a look.) I’m a grown up and heading to Disneyland is not a big deal for me. I’ve been plenty of times. I thought I was kinda over it. But I was wrong. Disney still can make magic and get the little girl inside me to squeal with delight. And they’ve gone to a lot of trouble to do so.Cars Land is the movie Cars come to life, literally. You walk down the road into Radiator Springs. All the buildings are just as you’d expect, from the Cozy Cone Inn to Luigi’s House of Tires. In fact it’s a little spooky to have a cartoon so real. You can even walk out of town to the desert where you ride in one of the racers. And that is where they got me. It was cool to see Mader and fun eat at Flo’s but riding through the flats in a real Car from town was very cool.Of course I had to wait in line, a very long line. Disney is great at line management. There is a lot to look at and things did move along but it got boring nonetheless. I knew this would happen. I’ve been to the park before, it always happens. But I was prepared. I pulled out my knitting. I’ve been making tiny puffs for a beekeeper’s quilt. They travel well and I can make one anywhere. I cast on. The line did a little switch back and a lovely woman leaned across the ropes and touched my arm. “I’m a crafter too.” We giggled at each other. “What are you making?” she asked. I told her about my little puffs turning into a quilt one day. She sighed, “I wish I could quilt in line.” I commiserated with her. She watched as the line switched back several times and I finished my little puff. But finally it was time to ride!We hopped in a car with six passengers. Once buckled up we rolled pleasantly through the countryside and then into town. And was great fun. But the best part came when we revved up the engines and raced the car beside us. It was fast but not scary. I am NOT a roller coaster fan but this was thrilling for me. We zoomed through the dust bowl and eventually slowed back into the garage. (Our Car won by the way.)It was exciting and all I wanted to do was get back in line and try it again and again and again. Yes I rode it four times. If you don’t mind being is single rider you can take this trip 2 or 3 times in an hour rather than wait in the long line. Since the ride is designed for 6 there are always cars needing an extra passenger. Of course this means you won’t need to bring your knitting along. teeheeIt was fun to be reminded how much I like being a kid. Fun to scream with delight. And delightfully fun to know crafters are everywhere, even in long lines at Disneyland. Teehee. Summer is meant for kid type activities and my summer has started off with a bang.
