Stitch Markers

I use stitch markers liberally. I mark pattern repeats of lace. I keep track of how many rows on my socks. I mark which is the right side of garter stitch. I like playing with my collection of stitch markers, arranging them by color and size. And they make a great impulse buy at a LYS if there is no yarn I need. As if there is ever a reason to stop buying yarn. Ha!I am glad these little bits can keep me on track. They alert me to change coming. Or they let me know when it’s easy stitches of stockinette. They keep track of the details so I can enjoy the overall picture. As I sprinkled another project with stitch markers I wondered how great it would be if my life had such a visible road map. Little signposts marking where I am and pointing where I’m going—kind of a safety net. Okay I’m giving stitch markers more credit then they probably deserve. But their function gave me pause. Wouldn’t it be great if there were stitch markers I could plant in other areas of in my life? They could point out change is coming!I’m talking more than a post-it notes on the frig here. I’d like some way to get a heads up of what’s coming: craziness, or delight, weirdness or wonderful. It’s just a little knitting fantasy thought, because there is no such thing. Instead I have to be awake and alert. I have to take joy in the details around me and see for myself when there is a change brewing. I am lazy though and it’s easier to just roll along trying to get through and get by. But I think I’d find more joy if I paid better attention to the details—maybe I’d even see change when it popped up. Hmmm…
