WWKIP
Knitting is full of abbreviations like K2tog. SSK. YO. UFO. WIP. And then there is the one we’ll use for a week this month. Starting tomorrow Saturday June 9 and running through Sunday June 17th it is WWKIP, which stands for World Wide Knit In Public. It is the time when we take to the streets and knit for all to see. Now if you are like me you are not sure what all the fuss is about; I knit in public all the time. In fact it was especially useful to have my sticks with me on a recent trip to Disneyland, so many long lines. But here is the reason many knitters get so jazzed about knitting in public: It’s a time to recruit more knitters, and, let’s be honest, a time to show off. Nothing is so mysterious as watching someone knit with double points. But when the showboating is over what we really want is to share our joy. WWKIP is a time when we let lots of people in our secret: Knitting Rocks Our World.During the coming week there are staged events and you will not be alone. There are groups of folks knitting together. This is beyond just a knit circle meeting at Panera (though apparently it is THE spot to knit in a lot of towns). This is the time when knitters are trying to get the word out about how thrilled they are with this craft. We love it so much we will do it where ever and when ever we can. Many yarn shops are sponsoring events. Maybe your knit circle is doing something special. This week when someone asks you about your knitting be an ambassador. Hold up your project with pride. Wax poetic about the calming effects of yarn. Grace them with a squeeze of the soft fibers you are working with. Then smile at their reluctance to join you. When they say things like: It’s too hard. It’s too time consuming. It’s too expensive. Remember when you thought all those silly things. And look at you now! Yarn is good. Knitting is grand. This week let the public know: WWKIP
